Anyone planning a wedding today has probably heard the statistic: the average U. S. wedding costs $30,000 to throw. While that may seem like a lot of money to most of us, it’s nothing compared to what the rich and famous will invest in the special day for themselves or for their cherished offspring.
Let’s look at a few examples of what people are willing to spend.
One of the most expensive celebrity weddings was Liza Minnelli’s marriage to David Gest back in 2002. The whole event, including her dress designed by Bob Mackie and gifts for their wedding guests including Diana Ross and Queen guitarist Brian May, cost $3.5 million. Another expensive celebrity wedding was between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Their wedding at an Italian castle reportedly cost most than $2 million, including its fabulous after-party fireworks display.
Other big celebrity wedding spenders, include
- Paul McCartney & Heather Mills
- Elizabeth Hurley & Arun Nayar
- Elizabeth Taylor & Larry Fortensky
- David and Victoria Beckham
- Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston
- Donald Trump & Melania Knauss
No matter how lavish these affairs may have seemed, they in no way compare to the most expensive wedding – and wedding invitations – in recent memory.
The Most Expensive Wedding Invitations
The most expensive wedding was thrown by Lakshmi Mittal. Mittal owns a steel company and is considered one of the world’s richest people. His net worth is over $6 billion. The wedding of his daughter, Vanisha, in 2004 was a huge event. The first sign that it was going to be something special was the wedding invitation.
Mittals’ invitations were no ordinary piece of stationery. Each invitation was 20 pages in length and included verses written by members of the family. However, what really set the invitations apart was that they were encased in silver! While the average family might be able to afford one or two of those invitations, the Mittals’ guest list included 1,200 people!
The rest of the event was equally impressive. The wedding spanned five days and even included a re-enactment of the couple’s courtship written by Javed Akhtar, a big name in the Bollywood industry. The music and choreography were also handled by well-known industry professionals.
The wedding ceremony took place in the Palace of Versailles in France. Other parts of the affair were held at one of the finest chateau’s in France, and the fireworks display that was part of the event was being held at the Eiffel Tower.
In the end, Mittal reportedly spent $70 million on the celebration. That’s definitely more than average.
