Choosing Magician for Magic Birthday Party

A flick of the wrist and a wave of the wand and Voila, you have a Magic themed birthday party, right? If only it were that easy. A touch of magic is a great way to celebrate a special birthday, but it takes some careful planning behind the mirrors to pull it off without a hitch. The ultimate part of a Magic-themed birthday party will be having a real magician present to perform a show and entertain the kids with skilled illusions. Because the magician is such a key part of the event, the selection process is an important pre-birthday task.

Finding the Magic

Presumably this is the first magic party you have ever thrown, so how do you go about finding the perfect wizard to fill the role of performer and entertainer? The best way is word of mouth. Personal recommendations will tell you a lot more than a two-inch add in the yellow pages, so start asking around early. Talk to other parents, or try asking around at different children’s organizations your kid participates in; they are likely to have contacts, or at least good suggestions to get you started. These days anyone who has a service to offer also has a website on which to advertise it, so look around on the web as well. Regardless of who you choose, you will absolutely want to meet with them in person before you officially hire them.

License to Amaze

What should you be looking for in a magician? Of course you want someone with skill and ability in pulling off lots of different tricks, but your main concern will be finding someone that has good experience with kids and birthday parties, and who will fit in with your party. Arrange to meet in person and ask lots of questions about qualifications and past experience doing similar events. Ask for references and follow through with checking them. Again, references speak very strongly for this sort of thing.

Once you have settled on a magician you are happy with, carefully work out all the details in advance. Arrange the precise times that the magician will attend the party, and clarify what his or her role will be. How and when will the magician arrive? What will be expected of him? You might not be able to ask for his secrets, but get a thorough understanding of what types of tricks will be performed, so that nothing will catch you by surprise. Arrange payment in advance – your research should have given you a good idea of what a fair price is for the service you want. Remember that a nice tip is always appreciated by a magician who has performed her role well.

Add Some Razzle Dazzle

Selecting the magician is the hard part. Enjoy the rest of your party planning. Start with magic invitations showing off wizard themes or a rabbit in a hat. Pick out fun decorations to match the thrill of the event, and put together goody-bags with some kind of simple magic trick or puzzle in them. Voila, magic!

Send out the Invitations

Get creative with your invitations. Let people know you’re going to have a magician-they’ll be way more likely to accept your invite.
